Dell XPS M1330 / 13.3-inch Notebook Review

Dell XPS M1330 / 13.3-inch Notebook Review
I bet I know the big question you're asking - was the Dell XPS M1330 worth the wait? I'd like to answer that with a resounding YES. While it's unacceptable that there has been a relatively high proportion of build faults with the laptop, Dell is dedicated to correcting these issues. It's far from an ideal situation, but I get to use this system while a new one is built and shipped to me.

Everything else just screams quality. The design is absolutely fantastic and rivals the most aesthetically pleasing designs out there. The materials used are premium and the price is lower than a comparable system. And despite all the things that have been said about Dell customer service, I truly believe that most of the employees are dedicated to making the customer happy, within reason. I know my experience has not given me any reason to doubt that.

Before purchasing this laptop, I was looking for something that was small, light and well built so I wouldn't cringe at the thought of bringing it to classes and business meetings daily. The Dell XPS M1330 serves that purpose admirably. If you're looking for a dedicated gaming machine or a budget laptop, look elsewhere, but if you're like me and want something portable for a fair price, the M1330 should be on your short list.

With a design that is second to none in its price range and excellent performance the Dell XPS M1330 is sure to be one of the most popular notebooks of 2007. As of this writing the M1330 First Look Review is already the most popular article in our forums based on views and replies.

While issues like warm palm rests, awkward media buttons, a noisy slot-loading drive, and somewhat heavy weight with the 9-cell battery will make some demanding buyers look elsewhere, most consumers looking for a 13.3-inch notebook will be hard pressed to find a better notebook in the same price range.

Pros :
Fantastic design
Premium materials
Great battery life
Gorgeous display (brightness, viewing angles)
Extras included (sleeve, earbuds, remote)
Price is lower than comparable models

Cons :
Fit and finish issues
Only two USB ports
A bit deeper in dimension than similar 13.3" laptops
Very loud insert and eject mechanism for the disc drive
The wait

Dell XPS M1530/15.4-inch Laptop Review

Dell XPS M1530/15.4-inch Laptop Review
Dell made a serious effort in 2007 to listen to customer feedback criticizing Dell’s older, thick and heavy laptops. The result was the amazingly thin and light XPS M1330, one of the sexiest looking notebooks of 2007. The new Dell XPS M1530 is an impressive 15.4-inch" screen notebook designed similar to (just larger than) the very successful 13-inch XPS M1330.

Our pre-production XPS M1530 is equipped with the following specs:

  • 15.4-inch WXGA (1280 x 800) CCFL glossy screen
  • “Crimson” red paint (also available in “Tuxedo” black or “Alpine” white)
  • 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo T7500 processor, Santa Rosa chipset (up to 2.4GHz available)
  • 2GB DDR2-667 SDRAM (up to 4GB DDR2 SDRAM available)
  • 160GB 5400 RPM SATA HDD (32GB SSD drive available)
  • Slot-loading dual-layer DVD±RW drive
  • NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600M GT with 256MB GDDR3
  • WWAN option for Verizon
  • Ethernet, 802.11a/g/n (Intel 4965), Bluetooth option
  • Integrated 2.0 megapixel webcam
  • HDMI, VGA, S-Video, Firewire/1394, three USB 2.0 ports, integrated media reader (MS, SD, xD), fingerprint reader
  • Media Center remote located in ExpressCard slot
  • Windows Vista Home Premium
  • Dimensions (with 6-cell battery): 14.06″ x 10.34″ x 0.93″ – 1.38″
  • Weight starts at 5.9 pounds with 6-cell battery (6.29 pounds with 9-cell)

Build and Design

The Dell XPS M1330 has received high praise for its design and feature set in a 13.3″ portable form factor, but the most popular selling laptops are in the 15.4″ screen size. Dell, being in the business of selling more laptops and making customers happy, figured it would be wise to offer something that’s larger and appeals to more people. And that’s exactly what the M1530 is — a larger version of the M1330.

As we said in our First Look article, it’s as if Dell put the M1330 on steroids and the M1530 is the end result — the laptop size increased proportionally and it’s also more powerful in its new form. The design and look is mostly the same, the keyboard feels the same, the touch sensitive controls are replicated and for the most part the ports are the same (though you do get an extra USB 2.0 port on the M1530). That said, when we compare the M1530 and the M1330 side by side we can’t help but think the design of the M1530 is “overweight” in comparison.

There are some notable differences other than size between the M1530 and M1330 however. The M1530 can be configured with a more powerful Nvidia 8600M GT graphics card for boosted gaming performance over the XPS M1330 that only offers up to the Nvidia 8400M GS. The M1530 also offers up to a 2.80GHz Intel T7800 processor, whereas the XPS M1330 tops out at an Intel T7500 2.2GHz processor. Obviously if you’re all about the performance metrics and don’t carry a laptop around much, the XPS M1530 is a better fit for you.

Some people might wonder if they should go for the Dell Inspiron 1520 15.4″ notebook or the Dell XPS M1530 15.4″. After all, they’re both consumer notebooks from the same company that can be configured similarly, so what’s the point? For one, the XPS M1530 is way more eye catching in terms of design than the Inspiron 1520. The barrel hinge, dropdown screen and sloping look of the M1530 is just cool. Second, the XPS M1530 weighs just 5.9 lbs with a standard 6-cell battery and just 6 lbs and 4.6 ounces (6.29 lbs) with its 9-cell battery. The Inspiron 1520 weighs more than 7 lbs with the 6-cell battery. Other benefits of the XPS M1530 notebook include a sleeker slot loading optical drive, touch sensitive light-up buttons, dedicated XPS tech support, media remote control and thinner profile.

Screen

Another difference that should be mentioned is that currently the M1530 is offered with only a standard 15.4″ widescreen XGA (1280 x 800) display, while the XPS M1330 has the option for a thinner and more power efficient LED backlit display. Dell says the XPS M1530 should be available next year with different resolution screens … including LED backlight options.

Even though some will be a little put out by the lack of LED backlighting being offered on the M1530 initially, the standard CCFL display is still gorgeously bright and flawless. Plus you get a higher 2.0MP web cam with the standard thicker CCFL screen, whereas with a thinner LED screen only a VGA resolution cam can be fitted.

The screen on our pre-production unit looks flawless from straight on and the horizontal viewing angles are great. Upper vertical viewing angles are good, but colors did begin to invert at lower viewing angles when the screen is tilted back.

Keyboard, Touchpad and Media Controls

The keyboard on the XPS M1530 is fairly similar to the XPS M1330, with obvious reasons. The keyboard is firm with virtually no flex and the keys have excellent travel and cushion. The XPS M1530 is really quite a pleasure to type on. The only complaint I have for the keyboard is that if your fingernails are slightly long they might get caught under the keys, this shouldn’t be a problem for most males though.

The touchpad works well enough, though it’s seems a little on the small side given the size of the notebook. The mouse buttons have excellent travel and cushion, though I did feel like they made a bit too much of a “clicking” sound when pressed. The good news with the touchpad is that it’s responsive, has dedicated scroll areas and the textured feel is good.

A series of touch-sensitive media buttons with blue LED backlights are located above the keyboard similar to the buttons on the M1330. One nice feature about the media buttons is that the blue LEDs only stay lit for a fraction of a second after being pressed, so they won’t distract you by staying lit all the time.

Dell also includes a Media Center remote control that fits neatly into the ExpressCard slot on the side of the notebook. This is a great accessory for presentations or if you want to control a DVD from across the room.

Ports and Features

The built-in HDMI is a very nice thing to have for those that want digital video output, S-Video is also there for the more old-fashioned approach to that. With FireWire, three USB ports, a media card reader, two headphone jacks, microphone jack, ExpressCard slot and Ethernet port you’re well equipped ports wise.

I was a bit let down by the fact the M1530 only includes three USB ports since most 15.4″ notebooks have four. However, the multiple video-out options and overall thin design make the lack of USB ports “somewhat” understandable.

Some of our editorial staff are huge fans of slot-loading drives and while I think these drives look amazing, I’m not entirely sold on the technology. Slot loading drives don’t like small DVDs or CDs like those you sometimes receive with hardware drivers or in the mail. Another issue is that slot-loading drives tend to be a bit more noisy than traditional tray-type drives (more on that later in this review).

Speakers

The speaker quality was “acceptable” for a notebook without a built-in subwoofer. Based on the M1330 that one of our editors owns I would suspect that the speakers in the M1530 are the exact same part as the speakers used in the M1330.

The speakers for the M1530 are located at the top of the keyboard area above the media buttons. There’s not much to write home about the speakers, they get loud enough with minimal distortion, but the sound is slightly tinny as is the case with nearly all laptop speakers.

Battery Life

The 9-cell extended-life battery provides excellent battery life for the M1530. With Vista’s power management running in “high performance” mode, screen brightness set to maximum and wireless on, the 9-cell battery delivered more than 3 hours and 30 minutes of battery life. We’re certain that the 9-cell battery could deliver more than 4 hours of life with the notebook set to “balanced” or “power saver” mode and the screen brightness turned down.

One thing to mention is that with the 9-cell battery in you get an overall greater slope to the keyboard, we actually like this for ergonomics, it feels more comfortable for typing.

Dell also included a standard 6-cell battery with our pre-production review unit. Unfortunately, the standard 6-cell battery had been abused (cracked) before we received the unit, so we decided to play it safe and did not conduct tests with the 6-cell battery.
Conclusion

Overall, the Dell XPS M1530 is a solid addition to the Dell notebook lineup. We praised the smaller XPS M1330 for having “a design that is second to none in its price range” but we didn’t feel quite as strong about the design of the larger M1530. While this is certainly the hottest 15.4″ notebook available from Dell, it’s hard to shake the feeling that we’re looking at a “fat” M1330 with a larger screen.

While issues like a noisy slot-loading drive, noisy hard drive, and limited screen options will make some demanding buyers look elsewhere, the M1530 is an excellent alternative to HP’s popular dv6500t notebook in the same price range.

Pros

* Thin and light … for a 15.4″ Dell notebook
* Nvidia 8600M GT card option uses high-performance GDDR3 memory
* Reasonable battery life
* Nice keyboard, touchpad and media buttons

Cons

* Only three USB ports
* Slot-loading drive is loud during loading and ejecting
* Hard drive noise is magnified by the case/mount design
* Limited screen options at the time of this writing

New Dell Studio XPS 16 Laptops

New Dell Studio XPS 16 Laptops

The Dell Studio XPS 16 isn’t as specifically geared towards gaming as other gaming laptops featured on this site. Nevertheless, it offers enough high-end computing features that all but the most extreme gamers will find it to be a good choice. As with other computers, comparing one to another can be a challenge because of the vast number of options that are available from most manufacturers. We found that this unit offers a terrific selection of options at a reasonable cost, making it a good choice for many users.

Though the Studio XPS 16 isn’t specifically dubbed a gaming laptop, it possess just about all of the features that mobile gamers require: most notably speed and power. A feature that it doesn’t have in common with lots of other gaming laptops is weight. Depending on configuration, this unit weighs in at just about six-and-a-half pounds which isn’t much more than half of some of our other top rated gamers. That itself can be a pretty powerful selling point when it comes to selecting a computer that’s going to be lugged around in a backpack.

As with any gaming laptop, the processor is the heart of the XPS 16. It comes equipped with one of Intel’s leading-edge chips: the Intel Core i5 540M Quad Core processor. Each core runs at 2.53GHz with a 3MB Cache. The video processor is integrated into the motherboard which is likely the single feature that limits this machine in terms of extreme gaming.

The speed of this gaming laptop is enhanced by the 4GB of dual channel DDR3 RAM. That is currently billed as a limited time feature and it could be upgraded to 6GB. For even more power, the unit can be equipped with 8GB of RAM which shares the same specifications.

The standard storage device for this computer is a 500GB, 7,200RPM hard drive. For the fastest data access speeds, solid state drives can be substituted. They’re available in 128GB and 256GB sizes. Though smaller, data access time approaches zero for all practical purposes.

The gaming laptop comes standard with an 8x CD/DVD burner can handle dual layer recording and supports all DVD+/-R formats. A similar burner which also has the ability to play Blu-ray discs is also available as an option. Wi-Fi connectivity is built-in as is Bluetooth capability. Not surprisingly, Bluetooth accessories are optional. The included operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium though it can be upgrade to Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate.

The XPS 16 gaming laptop comes with Dell’s basic two year service plan. It can be upgraded to three years. There’s also an available Advanced In-Home service plan. It requires remote diagnosis by Dell technicians before a technician is dispatched for service.

New Dell Studio XPS 16 Laptops

Summary:

To be an effective gaming laptop, there has to be a lot of computing power from the CPU and RAM. Though not specifically designated a gaming computer by the manufacturer, the Dell Studio XPS 16 has enough to get you by. It’s also a lot lighter than most laptops that earn the gaming moniker. It offers this most attractive package at a price that’s very reasonable compared to most of its competition.

Dell XPS 15 15.6-inch Gaming Laptop Review

Dell XPS 15 15.6-inch Gaming Laptop Review
Recently, Dell unveiled three new XPS laptops. The first laptop to be reviewed was the Dell XPS 17. Today, we're looking at the Dell XPS 15 for gamers who require mobility at an affordable price. The Dell XPS 15 is equipped with an Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory, and NVIDIA GT 420M graphics. The audio quality is exceptional on this laptop, gameplay is adequate, but battery life is disappointing with the base 6-cell battery. Overall, if you're on a budget, this notebook will get you gaming with medium settings. If you're an avid gamer, though, the larger Dell XPS 17 is worth considering.

Pros :

* Cost
* Available Options
* Stellar Audio
* NVIDIA Graphics with Optimus Technology

Cons :

* Disappointing Battery Life
* Heavy
* 720p Screen as Opposed to 1080p
* Lack of Blu-ray as a Standard Option

Description :

* Intel Core i5-460M Processor
* 15.6" HD 720p WLED Display
* NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M Graphics with Optimus Technology
* 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 Memory
* 500GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
* 8x CD/DVD Burner
* 56 WHr 6-Cell Battery
* Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000
* JBL 2.1 Speakers
* Windows 7 Home Premium
* 15" x 10.4" x 1.3" @ 6.14 Lbs

Starting at $850, the Dell XPS 15 features a 720p 15.6-inch WLED display. Although this is a bit inferior to rival laptops equipped with full HD screens, there is an option to upgrade to a full 1080p display with facial recognition for $130 more. The exterior casing is made of silver anodized aluminum, and the interior features black palm rests and a black backlit keyboard. It is on the heavy side, though, weighing in at 6.14 pounds with the 6-cell battery.

Like most other pre-built systems, the Dell XPS 15 comes with Windows 7 Home Premium. The base system features an Intel Core i5-460M that runs at 2.53GHz with Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz. This is adequate for mainstream gaming. Since the Dell XPS 15 is fully customizable, there is an option to upgrade to a Core i7, but the price tag is steep at $500.

Although an upgrade from the base NVIDIA GT 420M video card to the NVIDIA GeForce GT 435M 2GB graphics card would normally be recommended, it does require an upgrade to an Intel Core i7 quad-core processor as well. If you have the budget, it's fine, but many mainstream gamers do not. The NVIDIA GT 420M-based Dell XPS 15 can still be used with medium settings in the latest games, since it's a newly released graphics card with 96 shaders and a 128-bit memory interface. The NVIDIA GT 420M also offers Optimus technology.

Along with NVIDIA graphics, the Dell XPS 15 comes standard with 4GB of dual channel DDR3 memory. This is an average amount of memory for a laptop in this price range, but more memory is definitely a good thing to make it future-proof.

Luckily, storage is more than adequate with a base 500GB 7200rpm hard drive that offers decent speed with ample space. A solid state drive is available as a $550 option, but it's not worth the price unless you travel incessantly. Although load times of games improve with an SSD, that's about it. It won't give you any marked improvement once in the game.

The Dell XPS 15 gaming laptop PC also comes equipped with a 56 WHr 6-cell battery which makes battery life disappointing. If you want to game on the go, be sure to bring the AC adapter on any prolonged journey. What really stands out is the sound quality. Boasting JBL 2.1 built-in speakers, the Dell XPS 15 offers better audio than many other laptops in this price range. Since this laptop is geared for multimedia, though, it would be nice if a Blu-ray drive was standard. It's easy to overlook this issue, though, since the Dell XPS is priced aggressively.

Overall, the Dell XPS 15 is a decent 15.6-inch machine for the budget-conscious gamer. It offers flexible options, a fast hard drive, and 720p screen. Although gameplay is a bit cramped on any 15-inch notebook, the Dell XPS 15 is easy to tote around for on-the-go gaming. For gamers looking for smooth gameplay in a desktop replacement, though, check out the Dell XPS 17 or ASUS G73 Series

Dell XPS 17/17.3-inch Gaming Laptop

Dell XPS 17/17.3-inch Gaming Laptop
After scrapping the original XPS name years ago for the more affordable Studio XPS line, Dell has just relaunched the XPS brand with three new models. Aptly called the XPS 14, 15, and 17 based on the screen size, these laptops are appealing to gamers largely due to the available options and mid-range price tag. But are these notebooks great for gaming? The Dell XPS 17 offers a unique set of features, including NVIDIA GeForce GT 435M graphics and built-in JBL speakers. Hot off the presses, the Dell XPS 17 offers decent DirectX 11 gameplay, making it a worthy buy.

Pros :

* Available Options
* Speakers
* HD Webcam
* Price

Cons :

* Resolution
* Lack of an Optional High-End Video Card

Description :

* Intel Core i5-460M Processor
* 17.3-inch HD+ (900p) WLED Display
* 4GB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 Memory
* 500GB SATA 7200RPM Hard Drive
* NVIDIA GeForce GT435M 1GB Graphics
* 8x CD/DVD Burner
* One Mini DisplayPort, Two USB 3.0, Two USB 2.0, HDMI 1.4
* 56WHr 6-cell Battery
* 16.3" x 11.3" x 1.3" @ 7.57 Pounds
* Windows Home Premium 64-Bit

Out of the three new XPS laptops, the Dell XPS 17 is the best fit for gamers. With its 17.3-inch widescreen display, there is ample room for gameplay. The standard WLED screen supports 900p resolution for sharp looking games, but it'd be nice if a 1080p option was available. Paired with the included NVIDIA GeForce GT 435m, the Dell XPS 17 is a decent gaming laptop for under $1,000. Of course, seeing as this is a Dell model, it is fully customizable, so you can add more memory or upgrade to a bigger hard drive if need be.

Speaking of memory, the Dell XPS 17 comes equipped with 4GB of 1333MHz DDR3 memory for $949.99. Upgrading to 8GB will run you $180 with a max of 16GB of memory. If you're on a tight budget, 4GB is adequate, but it's worth upgrading to 8GB if you want the notebook to last. The base XPS 17 also arrives with an Intel Core i5-460M processor that runs at 2.53GHz. You can upgrade to the Core i7, but the Intel Core i5-460M does its job for the price.

Graphics on the base Dell XPS 17 are on par with mid-range gaming laptops. The NVIDIA GeForce GT 435M 1GB graphics card is a newer Fermi card that supports DirectX 11. If you have the funds, though, an upgrade to the NVIDIA GeForce GT 445M is recommended. With the upgraded graphics, you'll benefit from 144 CUDA cores and an 1180MHz processor clock. By comparison, the standard GT 435M has 96 CUDA cores and an 1300 MHz processor clock. If you're playing the latest games, the GT 445M will let you game at higher settings. The Dell XPS 17 also features NVIDIA Optimus technology, which optimizes battery life by switching between onboard graphics and the video card depending on usage.

Along with being gamer-friendly, the Dell XPS 17 is designed for multimedia enthusiasts. This means you can game and watch movies with ease. Touted as being 3D TV-ready, the XPS 17 features NVIDIA 3D Play software that allows you to connect the laptop to new 3D HDTVs. This may confuse some as 3D content cannot actually be displayed on the Dell XPS 17. It must be used in conjunction with a 3D HDTV to game and watch movies in 3D glory. It's not a necessary feature, but it is cool if you own a 3D HDTV or plan to purchase one in the future.

The Dell XPS 17 also boasts JBL built-in speakers for updated sound. This enhancement offers loud, crisp sound that is refreshing compared to weak speakers found in many rival notebooks. The XPS 15-inch and 17-inch models even have 12-watt subwoofers. Overall, the audio is superb with rockin' bass that is awesome for gamers.

In the moments you aren't gaming, the Dell XPS 17 also functions as a social tool with an integrated webcam that streams in HD and is Skype-certified (a first in the laptop PC sector). It's a niche feature that is great if you use a webcam often.

Externally, the Dell XPS 17 comes standard with a silver anodized aluminum display back. While the sleek surface is nice, it cannot hold a candle to the aluminum unibody design of a MacBook. However, the Dell XPS 17 makes gaming a whole lot easier than on a Mac. Overall, the XPS 17 is a great setup for both gamers on a budget and multimedia enthusiasts seeking a new platform.

Dell XPS MI210 (Vista) Laptops Review

Dell XPS MI210 (Vista) Laptops Review
Dell : Only a few ultraportables equalthe combination of performance and features found on the Dell XPS MI210 (Vista). The Lenovo ThinkPad X60 (Vista) and the SonyVAIO SZ Series, which do. are both darlings of the marketplace. which tells you the type of company the MI210 keeps. Dell labels the MI210 as an ultraportable; I'm inclined to call it a borderline mainstream laptop. The unit weighs 4.9 pounds, which is about a pound heavier than both the Lenovo X60 and Sony SZ series. It's practically the same weight as the 5-pound Apple MacBook 13-inch. Granted, you have to take into account the 85-Wh extended battery and the integrated optical drive, which add to the bulk.

Performance is nothing short of spectacular for a laptop this small. The 2-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 is the same standard-voltage, dual-core processor that powers the Lenovo ThinkPad X60 (Vista). All, in all, a true winner from Dell's stable. he XPS brand stands for many things, including uncanny performance, superior service quality, and excitement-inducing features. The Dell XPS MI210 packs all of this into a 4.9 pound frame-not the lightest ultraportable, but portable enough for all your travels.
