Dell Inspiron 6400 15.4 inch Laptop Review

new Dell Inspiron 6400
Dell's one of the well-known laptop maker has announced the launch of its new laptop namely, Dell Inspiron 6400. The Inspiron 6400 makes a good home or small-business system if it stays put most of the time, as it's too heavy for regular travel. With the new Inspiron 6400, all of the crucial elements are accounted for: You get a comfortable keyboard and touchpad, a decent display, and a very solid collection of basic multimedia features and connections. The base unit starts at approximately S$1,799, but Dell offers a vast array of configuration options for everyone from the most basic Web and email user to digital junkies who require midrange gaming and graphics capabilities. That said, if you're looking for a similar set of features but a larger display, check out the Inspiron 9400; if you're looking for something more portable, the Inspiron 640m weighs less and offers a similar experience, just with a nominally smaller display. HP also makes two systems, the Pavilion dv5100 and the Compaq Presario V5100, which offer comparable feature sets and weigh a little less.
Dell Inspiron 6400
Design

The Inspiron 6400's which powered by features 15.4-inch widescreen display can be configured with one of two native resolutions, XGA or the finer SXGA+, and either a glossy TrueLife or standard, nonglossy finish. We prefer the finer resolution, which affords more screen real estate, but if you have bad eyesight, the lower resolution will make text and graphics appear larger, though less detailed. The glossy finish makes the display look brighter but also gives off a distracting glare in sunny or well-lit environments. Our glossy, SXGA+ test unit delivered a solid score of 160cd/m² on our Minolta luminance meter, which tests a display's maximum brightness. The Inspiron 6400's keyboard is adequate, and the touch pad and two mouse buttons are nice and big, though they don't afford a great amount of tactile feedback.
best Dell Inspiron 6400
Features

The Inspiron 6400 provides a standard array of ports and connections that should fulfill the needs of most basic users. The offering is virtually identical to what you'll find on the Pavilion dv4000, except that the Inspiron 6400 lacks a Type II PC Card slot (inconsequential, unless you already have a bunch of PC Cards) and has a media card reader that supports one additional format (SmartMedia). One of the very best things about the Inspiron 6400 is the set of seven handy multimedia buttons that sit smack in the middle of its front edge, which makes it easy to control music and movies, even when the lid is shut no other vendor offers.

Dell Inspiron 1525/15.4-inch Laptop Review

Dell Inspiron 1525/15.4-inch Laptop Review
Overall, the Inspiron 1525 is a wonderfully balanced entry level system, offering something for almost everyone - the only exception being gamers. Superb battery life and decent display options are married to a great selection of features, making this one of the best options in the value 15.4-inch sector.

Dell has been on something of a roll recently. Its new range of XPS notebooks, the M1330 and M1530 were both great machines, while its desktop offerings, like the XPS 420, haven't been half bad either. But let it not be said that Dell has had things all its own way, because there have been a few turkeys lodged in there too - the XPS M1730 springs to mind.

Another underwhelming effort was the previous Inspiron laptop, the Inspiron 1520. Though it introduced some new elements, such as a range of colourful finishes, it was bulky and uninspiring in a time when notebooks were becoming slimmer and easier to handle. Indeed, the new XPS notebooks were very much the response to such criticisms and Dell seems to have taken the lessons learnt there and applied them to its replacement, the Inspiron 1525.

An entry level 15.4in notebook, the 1525 shares a very similar wedge shaped base to that of the XPS M1530. This is definitely not a bad thing. Dell quotes a starting weight of 2.7kg with a four-cell battery, but we found it weighed exactly that with a standard six-cell battery. This is a very decent weight for a notebook of this size, while the quoted thickness of 25mm to 37mm, front to back, means it feels slim and elegant.

There's also an even larger array of lid finishes to choose from. Standard options are for either a matte black or glossy white finish, while you can also choose from pink, brown, red, green or yellow Microsatin finishes or a new selection of designs called Commotion, Street, Chill and Blossom. Our sample has the Street design (above, on the left); probably the worst of the lot though a couple of them look pretty decent.

Overall, initial impressions of the Inspiron 1525 are almost entirely positive. Its new slimmer and lighter frame is a massive step forward, while the selection of lid designs is exhaustive. Inside things look good too; with nice textured sliver plastic and handy touch-sensitive media controls ripped more or less directly from the XPS range. Dell has also borrowed a trick from HP by sinking the touch pad into the chassis, and the keyboard is truly excellent, with light, crisp and responsive keys that make typing a breeze.

Again, the keyboard is identical to that found on the XPS range, but not everything is the same. You don't get a slot-loading optical drive and the battery packs lack the useful little battery meter that the premium line has. But, though the 1525 is noticeably cheaper, it doesn't look or feel like a cheap laptop, so you needn't feel embarrassed to own one - quite the contrary, in fact.

Dell Launches Inspiron 1750 /17.3 inch Laptop Review

Dell Launches Inspiron 1750 /17.3 inch Laptop Review
Dell Inspiron 1750 laptops in 2011 puts a focus on both looks and functionality as people today don’t want any sort of compromise while picking up a new laptop. Dell Inspiron 1750 notebook is a fine desktop replacement as it features a large 17.3 inch” widescreen display and a powerful Dual-Core processor.
Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor

With its fantastic ergonomic and powerful components, Dell Inspiron 1750 laptop is a complete entertainment package. The Intel Pentium Dual-Core processor provides sufficient power to effortlessly execute professional
softwares such as Dreamweaver and Adobe Photoshop. Backed by the massive 4GB RAM, the powerful 2.2 GHz processor handles multiple applications simultaneously. As we know that a dual-core engine produces power equal to two processors so you can better predict the performance this new Dell Inspiron 1750 can deliver.

Microsoft Windows 7 Operating System :

The pre-installed Windows 7 is great and helps you tackle basic tasks easily like surfing the web, checking emails, chatting and watching online videos. Compared to the previous Windows Vista and XP versions, the new Windows 7 brings plenty of improvements including an enhanced security, reliability and number of innovative features.

Large 17.3” Screen Display :

Dell Inspiron 1750 laptop is designed to provide you some awesome entertainment features. The large 17.3” widescreen display delivers sharp images with accurate colours. Being a high-end laptop, the large screen and dual-core technology attract the gamers because Dell Inspiron 1750 provides the lowest response time while running games and other graphics software. It’s the eye-catchy blue exterior that gives the chassis a gorgeous look on your office desk. Being a TFT screen with 1600×900 resolutions, you get all your graphics-oriented tasks done on this 17.3-inch display with Truelife technology.

320GB Hard Disk and Webcam :

When it comes to data storage capacity, Dell Inspiron 1750 comes equipped with a huge 320GB hard disk which delivers reasonable performance at an affordable price. The provided capacity is more than enough for an average user as 320GB means plenty of space for all your movies, songs, video clips, software and much more. Another great inclusion is the webcam which comes fixed on the front screen panel and adds life to your face-to-face communication.

Battery Life :

Undoubtedly a large screen display and a powerful processor consume the major portion of battery juice. Dell Inspiron 1750 also features a 17.3” screen but still enables you to work up to 3.5 hours and that is quite justified because the average battery life provided by a full fledged laptop ranges between 2 hours to 2.5 hours.

Dell Inspiron Mini 10 (TV Tuner) Notebook Review

Dell Inspiron Mini 10 (TV Tuner) Notebook Review
When it comes to netbooks, most manufacturers compete ruthlessly with each other over pricing. A netbook costing $25 less than another, for example, will be more attractive to consumers looking to maximize their dollar. However, many netbooks offer a variety of amenities for those willing to splurge a little, and nowhere is that more evident than with the Dell Inspiron Mini 10. While pricing for the Mini 10 starts at $299, the configuration we tested has more bells and whistles. Costing $574, it’s outfitted with a high-resolution display, an integrated TV tuner, and a six-cell battery. These features may be worth the investment for those who value entertainment options, but we wish that the Mini 10 had a less awkward touchpad design.

Design :

The Mini 10 shares the same design genes as the Mini 9 and Mini 12; the edges are rounded, and the black keyboard is offset with a smooth silver palm rest and touchpad. The base model of the Dell Mini 10 comes with a glossy, fingerprint-prone lid; our model came adorned with a graffiti-esque pattern called “Stickers 2 in Blue,” and most of the iconography reminded us of corporate logos and characters from the 1980s. This design, as well as four others and five solid colors, can be had for an additional $40.
The Mini 10 is one of the most compact 10-inch netbooks on the market. Measuring 10.3 x 7.2 x 1.3 inches, it’s both thinner and shorter than the Samsung NC10 and the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE. It isn’t as thin or light as the 10-inch, 2.4-pound HP Mini 1000, but the 3-pound Mini 10 fit into a small messenger bag and with plenty of room to spare. Its 0.4-pound AC adapter is also more compact than most of its ilk. However, its six-cell battery angles downwards, tilting the netbook towards the user. This is a somewhat helpful ergonomic decision, but we prefer the nearly-flush battery of the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA.

Keyboard and Touchpad :

The Mini 10 has a keyboard that maximizes the available real estate on the chassis, and it’s 92 percent of full size. We also appreciate the relatively large right Shift key. Typing on the Mini 10’s flat keyboard was fairly comfortable, and the keys themselves offered good, springy feedback.

To save space, Dell integrated the right and left mouse buttons into the touchpad itself. The good news is that you’re not stuck with a single bar (like some netbooks) and that the left and right buttons are distinct. Unfortunately, the buttons are quite small, and not as usable as a traditional setup. In addition, the cursor would sometimes move before we clicked down, which was annoying.

Since the touchpad features Elantech’s multitouch gestures (including rotating, two-finger scrolling, and pinching to zoom), it has a bit of a learning curve. When we tried to left-click on the pad while inadvertently dragging another finger on it, we unintentionally zoomed in on a window. Disabling the pinch-and-zoom gesture in the settings helped solve the problem; it was then easier to scroll using two fingers. Nevertheless, we prefer larger touchpads with discrete touchpad buttons, which is what you’ll find on the Toshiba mini NB205.

Ports and Slots :

The left side of the Mini 10 has (from back to front) a Kensington lock slot, one USB port, and a 3-in-1 memory card reader. The right side houses an Ethernet jack, two more USB ports, an HDMI port, and mic and headphone jacks. Though some may bemoan the lack of a VGA port for connecting the Mini 10 to projectors, the HDMI port helps future-proof this netbook somewhat.

Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Notebook Review

Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Notebook Review
Dell Mini 9: was actually quite slow in catching up with the netbook craze, and it took until late last year for the Irish manufacturer to release this model.

The Dell Mini 9 sums up everything you expect from an average netbook; it comes with the standard 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, Intel GMA950 graphics and a choice of a small solid state drive or more roomy hard drive. Moreover you get to choose from either Linux (Ubuntu) or Windows XP Home as the primary operating system.

So, why should you buy the Dell Mini instead of one of the other myriad netbooks out there with the exact same specs? For one thing the starting price is very low, just $249, but that gets you a mere 4GB SSD, so most potential buyers will probably add a few bucks for more storage space. Nonetheless, it is still very affordable.

Another great thing about the Mini 9 is that you can get it in a variety of colors and decorations, although this will also cost you extra as per Dell's business model. The 'standard' color is glossy black (and it is very glossy I might add). The screen on the Mini is good, and doesn't have that large frame that many other netbooks have. On the downside, the keyboard feels more cramped than average, but that comes as no surprise on a 9-inch netbook.
Performance and Conclusion

The battery lasted just over 3 hours, which is completely acceptable. For some reason we couldn't get WorldBench to run on the Dell Mini, but the WPrime 32M test finished in 124 seconds.

If you feel like buying a low-end version and upgrade it later (with cheaper parts) you will be happy to learn that it's very easy to access the internal components, as they are grouped together beneath a panel next to the battery.

If you're looking for a netbook, the Mini 9 should definitely be taken into consideration - it's a solid, highly customizable little laptop available at a very attractive price point.

Edit: Although it would be amazing if the Mini indeed came with a 2.6GHz Atom, it was of course supposed to read 1.6GHz. Thanks Usman for the bump.
Dell Mini 9 Technical Specifications

* Processor Atom N270 1.6GHz

* OS Linux (Ubuntu)/Windows XP Home
* Weight 2.3lbs
* Screen 9
* Screen resolution 1024x600
* Graphic Card Intel GMA950
* Battery Life 3:07

New Dell Inspiron Duo Netbook

New Dell Inspiron Duo Netbook
The Dell Inspiron Duo convertible netbook / tablet is definitely a very interesting computer, and should be available as soon as next month (December).

The Dell Duo netvertible has taken a slightly different approach than most current netvertibles on the market, by having the 10.1-inch display rotates at its sides, rather than having a rotateable hinge at the bottom center of the display.

This allows you to easily use the device as a netbook with all it’s functions such as keyboard and touchpad, and then rotate and lower the lid to use it as a fully functional tablet PC.

The Dell Inspiron Duo has a 10.1-inch display with a 1366 x 768 HD resolution, and is powered by the new dual core Intel Atom N550 processor, along with 2GB of RAM and a 250GB / 320GB hard drive. It also features the Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator card for 1080p HD playback.

Priced at $549, the Dell Duo should be available early December. While the price might seem a little high, you are getting a well spec’ed netbook with good features such as the dual core processor, HD display, Windows 7 Home Premium, and of course the ability to use it as a touchscreen tablet PC.

The Dell Inspiron Duo has just shown up to pre-order from Microsoft for $549, and we’re sure it will soon be able to order from Dell directly.
