Asus Eee PC 1025CE / 10.1-inch laptop review

Asus Eee PC 1025CE / 10.1-inch laptop review

ASUS really got it right with the Eee PC. This nifty device has taken the world by complete and utter storm (apologies for cliché but, hey, it works) thanks to its size, power, and flexibility. Now ASUS have created a new Eee PC that is even more featuretastic than before. The Eee PC 1025CE has two very unique features that make it a particularly good choice for someone in the market for a portable PC. First off you get the brand new Intel Cedar Trail CPU. This next generation of processors come from the 32nm family with greater graphical prowess and lower power demands.

It makes these CPUs even more beautiful for mobile innovation and an ideal fit for one of the most portable pieces of tech on the market – the Eee PC. The CPU will have higher clock speeds, full support for DirectX 10.1 and HD decoding. Nice.

One of the main features is the Instant On. This way the 1025CE can sleep for up to 21 days but it’ll fire up the machine within 2-4 seconds at any time. This is way beyond the 3 days of standard sleep other notebooks offer, and even then if the battery dies or gets removed the resume data is lost. Instant On also avoids that scenario by backing up the resume data to the hard drive, this way even if after 21 days of nap when the battery drains, you can just plug it in and fire it up in 2-4 seconds again without losing any work.

All these lovely multimedia extras will work wonders with the new Eee PC 1025CE as will the other feature I’m really excited about – the range of colours. Call me shallow, but I do like to have something other than black or white slapped onto the back of the device I am using.
Asus Eee PC 1025CE
The colours come in two distinct flavours – matte and glossy. The colours are still being finalised at the moment but some of the ideas for the matte range include white, black, pink and brown. And these are very rich and subtle variations of these colours, which is very nice to see. Strangely enough, I love the black, it looks really chic.

In the glossy range there is blue, white, black and red. These may sound bland, but they are definitely not. The gloss plus the colour levels used make these really pop and shine. I am torn between the blue and the red myself.

In case you’re worried that all you get is an ace new chip and lovely colours, the Eee PC 1025CE also has a 10.1” display, onboard digital camera 0.3MP, tons of connectivity options including USB 2.0, HDMI, CardReader, Audio jacks, and more. The battery life is also incredible – a very healthy 14 hours – and you can connect via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Delicious.[techinstyle.tv]

ASUS Eee PC X101 / 10.1-inch Netbook review

ASUS Eee PC X101 / 10.1-inch Netbook review
ASUS is preparing a new surprise for us – the Eee PC X101 netbook model. Launched at the Computex 2011, it seems to be described as the perfect ultraportable for any modern mobile user. But if you think about a list of full specs, we tell you from the start that it is too soon and you have to wait for a while. Many of its features are not very clear at this moment, but if you continue to read you’ll certainly find all the useful available informations about it.

What we know for sure is that ASUS Eee PC X101 is equipped with a 10.1-inch display with a resolution of no less than 1024 x 600 pixels, or a 1.5GHz Atom Z670 single-core processor with GMA 600 integrated graphics. You’ll have more flexibility than ever as long as this netbook model gives the possibility to choose between Windows 7 or MeeGo OS.

Above all these, we have, present as always, some connectivity features such as 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. And let’s not forget the fact that it includes two USB ports, a headphones socket, dual microphones, a webcam or a chiclet keyboard. From the memory point of view, ASUS didn’t offered any informations, but it lets us know that we won’t have any reason to complain about its hard drive or solid state drive.

There are also rumours about three color options – white, red and gold. If you are interested to find a few numbers about the portability, we can tell you that is expected to weight even under 1kg or to have only 17.6mm in thickness. And there are plenty of pictures with this new ASUS Eee PC X101 in order to decide if it fits your interests or not. You’ll be able to take advantage of these capabilities and probably many others for a price starting from $199, but there’s no word about the availability date. But don’t worry, we will keep you updated with all the new details as they are starting to appear.ASUS Eee PC X101 / 10.1-inch Netbook reviewHardware details:
  • Intel Atom Processor (N435 at 1.33 Ghz), assumed to be Oaktrail
  • 10.1 inch matte display, with a resolution of 1024 x 600
  • 802.11b/g/n WiFi
  • 2 x USB ports, microSD card slot, headphone / audio port.
  • 2600 mAh / 28 Wh battery

Asus Eee PC 900/8.9-inch Laptop Review

Asus Eee PC 900/8.9-inch Laptop Review
Asus original Eee PC, the 701, caused a huge stir in the laptop market, and rightly so. Before it materialised ultraportable laptops were well beyond the reach of most wallets; yet for just £230, the Eee PC offered a fully functional, ultraportable laptop.

Sure, it wasn't perfect. There was no optical drive, the 7in screen was on the small side and, it certainly couldn't lay claim to being as drop dead gorgeous, nor as powerful, as premium-priced ultraportables such as Sony's VGN-TZ31. But the fact you could buy more than four Eees for the price of a single Sony opened everyone's eyes to just how cheap a laptop can be.

What the Eee lacks in good looks and alluring specifications, it more than makes up for with practicalities; and this new addition to the range, the Eee PC 900, addresses quite a few of the complaints levelled at the original.

The biggest change is that the tiny screen has been supplanted by an 8.9-inch panel, but while you'd expect this to make the 900 physically larger than its predecessor, it doesn't. Instead, the big black speakers which framed the original Eee's tiny screen have been moved to the underside of the laptop to make room.

It's a massive change for the better. Even with the specially tailored installation of Xandros Linux - a Windows XP version is also available, although we'll discuss the compromises later - the original's low 840 x 480 pixel resolution proved a little limiting for even the most basic browsing or document editing. Not only is the 900's screen physically larger, but its native resolution has risen to a far more manageable 1,024 x 600 pixels - enough to make surfing the web an enjoyable experience.

It provides good image quality too. It's no match for the likes of Sony's VGN-TZ31, but it's amply and evenly bright across its nine inches, and colours are vibrant and punchy. More disappointing is the noticeable graininess to the image, but it's not serious enough to impede day to day usage.

Room for manoeuvre
The rest of the Eee's specification has also had a slight overhaul. There's no sign of Intel's Atom processors yet, so the same Intel Celeron 900MHz processor beavers away under the hood. But the complement of memory has risen from 512MB to 1GB, and the hard drive has also swelled from the original 2GB or 4GB options to a much more sensible 20GB. The storage is spread between two drives, however, with 4GB provided by onboard flash memory and another 16GB provided by a separate internal SSD drive.

The 4GB partition is still a touch on the small side for the operating system partition, but, while the 16GB secondary drive is tiny by today's standards, it's a more than welcome improvement on one of the original Eee's major drawbacks. Now there's ample room for documents and collections of music and video files without having to remember to bring the right flash drive or SD card whenever you leave the house.

Thanks to the solid state disks, the Eee feels fantastically snappy in use. Our benchmarks can't be run under Linux, but we managed to get some of them running under a Windows XP installation. The 2D graphics and media-encoding segments returned scores of 0.28 and 0.33 respectively. That may not be fast, but considering the Eee's keen price, and the fact that intensive applications probably won't be its primary use, it's not bad at all.

ASUS Eee PC 1000HE Notebook Review

ASUS Eee PC 1000HE Notebook Review
Asus started the netbook craze with its tiny, 7-inch Eee PC. Shortly thereafter, every notebook manufacturer except Apple produced at least one tiny and inexpensive New laptops in 2011 just like it. Nowadays, netbooks are not that tiny anymore - little by little they have increased in size from 7" via 9" and now the standard screen size of a netbook is 10 inches. Even a couple of 12-inch models have been released.
Hardware

What they all have in common is the hardware - with a few deviations it consists of an Intel Atom CPU at 1.6GHz, 1GB or RAM, a 160GB hard drive and integrated GMA950 graphics. The Eee PC, however, has been upgraded with an ever so slightly faster 1.66GHz Atom processor and a higher 667MHz FSB speed instead of earlier models which had 533MHz.

The speed increase is not big enough to be noticeable, but you might feel better purchasing an upgraded model. Asus' main selling point with the 1000HE is the battery life. According to the manufacturer, you should be able to keep it alive for 9.5 hours without resorting to an outlet. To achieve this formidable battery life, you need to use aggressive power-saving schemes, no Wi-Fi and turn the brightness all the way down. In our general usage test it still delivered more than 7 hours, which is still more than acceptable.
Design

As far as the design goes, the Eee PC 1000 HE stays with the concept we've seen in previous Eee netbooks. The keyboard is almost full size (92%) and the trackpad buttons are slightly tilted in the front. The entire casing of the netbook is glossy, which enhances the overall look but also attracts fingerprints easily.

On the whole, the design of the 1000HE focuses on usability; it's not spectacularly thin like some of its siblings, such as Asus S101 netbook, but it certainly gets the job done with flying colors. Besides, keeping the design simple also helps keep the price to a minimum, which is often the deciding factor for a netbook buyer.
Connectivity and Features

The ports have been placed on the left- and right-hand sides of the laptop - none at the back. On the right is a memory card reader, 2 USB and VGA and on the left is another USB port, Ethernet, and audio line in/out.
Summary

While there are better looking netbooks on the market, the Eee PC 1000HE comes at a very attractive price point and offers excellent battery life. It's also very easy to use thanks to the large keyboard, and has all the features that the competition offer plus a little extra. Combine these aspects and you have one of the best netbooks currently available.

Asus Launches New U30S Laptops Review
Asus Eee Pad Transformer Rerview

Notebook ASUS Eee PC VX6 Lamborgini

Notebook ASUS Eee PC VX6 Lamborgini
We're no strangers to fast cars here at New Laptops in 2011, and we're certainly well acquainted with netbooks. We're even on speaking terms with the odd mutant hybrid of the two, and yet despite being pretty familiar with all of the above, the 12.1-inch Asus Eee PC Lamborghini VX6 netbook is still causing our collective eyebrows to rocket upwards.
It's an oddly shaped, car-themed netbook that'll set you back around £510, so strap in and let's take this weird little portable PC for a spin.
Automobilophilia

The design on offer here is pretty radical, and we can't tell if it looks cool and futuristic, or just plain hideous. The lid features a prominent Lamborghini badge that, while well made, will instantly single you out as the kind of person who buys things that carry car branding but crucially are not actual cars.

There's a jet-black gloss finish and a grille along the base of the lid, as well as an angular moulded shape on the top of the netbook that makes it look a bit like a car bonnet, which we'd guess is the idea.

The same styling extends to the interior, where pointy bits of chrome, angry-looking silvered edges and sloping wrist rests dominate. We'd suggest eyeing up the pictures above to get the full idea, but suffice to say it's a fairly striking look.

The lid is shaped a little like the bonnet of a car, though we're not keen on the showy Lambo logo.

The tapered trackpad and mirrored space above the keyboard will draw attention, and obsessives will be infuriated that the glowing white LED that marks the power switch on the right isn't replicated on the chrome patch symmetrically opposite. All in all, it's pretty mental.

We don't hate the design, though we wish we could take a screwdriver to the crass Lambo-logo on the lid. We think many people would prefer a sleeker, cleaner, more traditional netbook than this, especially if you're ever going to give a presentation or make a speech, and need to be taken even just a little bit seriously.

One final touch for Lamborghini-lovers is a loud revving noise when the laptop starts up. It's daft, but we have to admit it made us smile.

Just like a real Lamborghini, you'll struggle to fit this netbook into a small bag. Indeed, for something that falls into the netbook category, this is a rather un-portable machine. it measures 204 by 297 by 29mm, and weighs 1.5kg, making it bigger and heavier than most netbooks. The battery pack juts out at the bottom, which means the VX6's keyboard slopes slightly toward you (helpful) but also makes the whole netbook quite chunky (less helpful).
Key to ignition

The advantage of having a slightly larger chassis than most netbooks opt for is that you can fit in all sorts of neat bits and pieces. The keyboard for example is impressively spacious, so typing is comfortable. The trackpad is quite large too, and even though the click buttons are quite stiff, the mirror-finished sensitive surface feels pleasantly responsive.

The 12.1-inch display has a resolution of 1,366x768 pixels, which is higher than most netbooks. It's clear and bright, though we noticed the viewing angle isn't great -- tilting the screen even just a little will make the on-screen colours turn rather weird.

The trackpad is larger than those you find on most netbooks, making the VX6 easy to use.

There's a healthy port selection here as well. Three USB ports, one of which is USB 3.0, Ethernet, 3.5mm sockets for headphones and a mic, a multi-format card reader, and VGA and HDMI outputs complete the setup. There's a webcam above the display too, and a 250GB hard drive nestled among the VX6's insides. Also note that the whole lot runs on Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit.

Interestingly, the power supply jack that plugs into the netbook and keeps it juiced is incredibly tiny -- that's good for portability, but if you happen to lose the power cable, you might have a hard time replacing it.
Pedal to the metal

This netbook costs about £200 more than most, so you'll excuse us if we expect something a little special in the performance department. This micro machine is running on an Intel Atom D525 CPU clocked at 1.8GHz, backed up by 2GB of RAM and an Nvidia Ion graphics unit.

Now, to be honest, the Intel Atom chip isn't going to deliver a huge amount of computational grunt (even if it is dual-core), and while 2GB is better than the 1GB we see on many netbooks, it's still not a huge amount of memory. The graphics card, however, is more interesting, as that's unusual to see on a netbook.

Sadly though, this minuscule motorhead didn't manage performance too far out of the ordinary in our testing. There's a dedicated button at the top left of the keyboard that lets you quickly cycle through power modes, and we put the VX6 in turbo mode to run our benchmark tests. The netbook managed a score of 2,242 in our PCMark05 test, and 2,704 in our 3DMark06 test.

That's better performance than we'd expect from a netbook, especially in the graphics department, but it's not all that impressive, to be honest. Practically speaking, while ordinary multi-tasking will feel nice and fluid, you won't really be able to do many extra things with that hardware. We suspect gaming will be out of the question unless you're playing quite old games, and both our 1080p test footage and YouTube HD streaming played with some irritating stuttering.

Battery life is quite impressive -- we ran our Battery Eater benchmark, which guns a laptop's CPU at a constant 100 per cent and times how long it takes for the battery to drain. It sounds cruel, and it is, but it's a cold necessity. The VX6 managed 3 hours and 58 minutes in power-saving mode, so expect that battery life as a minimum. That's impressive, especially for a larger netbook with a graphics card.

That said, your options are slim if you want something netbook-sized that offers similar performance for around the same price. Either forsake performance and go with a smaller netbook (and save some money in the process) or get more computational grunt from a 'proper' laptop and sacrifice portability.
Conclusion

Although it's hardly understated, we don't mind the design, apart from the ostentatious Lambo badge on the lid. The large keyboard and trackpad make this PC comfy to use.

It falls between two stools, however -- too expensive when there are so many cheaper netbooks, but also not powerful enough to compete with full-sized laptops. If you like the design, this is a cool piece of kit, otherwise you're better off compromising with either a netbook or a full-sized laptop.

There is one machine that sits roughly alongside the VX6 -- the Acer Ferrari One, a netbook we reviewed in 2009 that also sports better-than-most performance. If you have a few more hundreds of pounds to spare, Alienware's M11x has an 11-inch screen but is otherwise a fully functional games machine.
