Samsung N210 / 10.1-inch Netbook review

Samsung N210
Samsung has launched its N210 which is powered by it features Intel Atom N450 Pine Trail processors, multit-touch touchpads, matte screens, and a new island-style keyboard design. And the Samsung N210 and N220 are no different. What sets these netbooks apart from Samsung’s other offerings is a 6 cell, 5600mAh battery which Samsung says can power the laptops for up to 12 hours.

The N210 and N220 also have a 3D textured pattern on the lid and ship with the Phoenix HyperSpace quick boot environment.

All of the press materials I’ve seen for the N210 and N220 so far pretty much group the two netbooks together as if they were identical. And in most respects they are. But the Samsung N220 is destined for Europe, while the N210 will be available in the US as early as this week.

The primary physical difference between the two laptops is the keyboard. The Samsung N220 has an extra large enter key that takes up more space than the enter key on the N210, while the N210 has a wider shift button on the right side of the keyboard. There are a few other minor differences in the keyboard, but as far as I can tell, the hardware specs for both models are pretty much identical.[liliputing.com]

Asus N53JN 17.3-inch Laptop Review

Asus N53JN 17.3-inch Laptop Review
Getting outside help to improve laptop audio isn't a new idea; Toshiba has enlisted Harman/Kardon's help on several occasions and Altec Lansing has added its weight to many a laptop over the years. Asus, however, is the first to our knowledge to enlist the help of Bang & Olufsen, and the Asus N53JN is the first fruit of their combined labour.

As reported recently, the N53JN is the smaller of two Bang & Olufsen ICEpower laptops - the other being the 17.3-inch N73JN. There's more to the machine than just its purported audio prowess, however, as the 15.6-inch machine also features a USB 3.0 port, Blu-ray and Nvidia's Optimus graphics switching technology. You could say it's a flagship laptop for Asus, a point reflected in the near £1,000 asking price.

Asus has lavished some attention to the design, too. Clad in brushed metal inside and out, the N53JN has a classy, imposing appearance that's enhanced by some dramatic curves around the hinges. And, wedged between the two hinges, is the enlarged speaker system of which Asus promises so much. Considering its relative size it's a surprisingly unobtrusive addition to the machine, a fact helped by the attractive metal grille.
Asus N53JN 17.3-inch Laptop Review
Inside the N53JN doesn't want for processing power. A 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 processor handles the day-to-day, supported by a 3MB Cache, 4GB of DDR3 RAM. Meanwhile graphics switches between a 1GB Nvidia GeForce 335M for the intensive work and Intel's power-efficient integrated graphics. For storage there's a 5,400rpm, 500GB hard drive. Throw in the Blu-ray player, the aforementioned audio enhancements, and a generous two-year warranty, and the N53JN represents decent value and lacks for little.

Much the same can be said for the connectivity. On the wireless side of things you get 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 - not 3.0 as seen in a few laptops and mobile phones of late. Also included is Gigabit Ethernet, and of course there's the ultra-fast USB 3.0 port - more on which you can read in our USB 3.0 guide. It's joined by three USB 2.0 ports, one of which doubles as an eSATA, giving you plenty of choice for your external devices.

Key Features :

Full product specification
* 15.6-inch 1366x768 pixel display
* 500GB 5400rpm hard drive
* Blu-ray drive
* 1GB Nvidia GeForce 335M GPU
* USB 3.0
Video connectivity is standard, with both VGA and HDMI on show, and there are just the two audio jacks - one for headphones, one for an external microphone. Unusually the memory card reader is placed on the left edge, which you may find an inconvenient change, and similarly the hardware wireless radio switch is tucked right away at the far end of the right edge. For the paranoid among you, Asus has added a plastic cover for the integrated webcam so people can't spy on you. Okay…

Review Asus N53SV 16-inch Laptops

Review Asus N53SV 1.6-inch Laptops
The Asus N53SV is a speedy 15.6-inch laptop that's definitely an all-purpose machine as it has a broad range of features and the speed to back it up. You'll find all of the necessary connectivity options, including USB 3.0 and eSATA. However the design of the keyboard is rather frustrating and leaves us scratching our heads in confusion.

The Asus N53SV measures 15.6 x 10.6 x 1.6-inches and weighs just about 6.5-pounds, which makes it rather large and almost a desktop replacement machine, but not quite. The chassis of the laptop is a flat-gray color that looks and feels quite well.

Asus : designed the keyboard and mouse touchpad to have quite a bit of space, which makes for a comfortable experience, until you try to work with the custom keyboard layout they used. The cursor keys are oddly placed and as a result, the right shift key is extremely short in width. Also, Asus toyed with the location of frequently used keys, like the Delete button, which is in a very non-traditional location. While these quirks are not major, they are quite challenging to get used to.

The 15.6-inch LED-backlit screen has a native resolution of 1366 x 769-pixels, which qualifies as 720p high-definition. The screen quality was quite good and delivered excellent viewing angles.

One of the selling points that Asus is using for this laptop is the Bang & Olufsen ICEpower audio technology that is inside the N53SV laptop. Audio quality was pretty good too, especially in the loudness category and it sounded crisp and clear as well. It wasn't anything "mind blowing", but it certainly did the job.

In terms of connectivity, you'll find three USB ports (one is USB 3.0), eSATA, gigabit ethernet, VGA-out, HDMI-out, a 5-in-1 memory card reader and the usual audio ports. There is also integrated 802.11b/g/n wireless with Bluetooth V3 connectivity. There is also a built-in TV tuner that supports both analog and DVB-T signals.

The internal specifications of the Asus N53SV include a very powerful Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU (2.0GHz), 4GB of DDR3 memory (upgradable to 16GB), a 750GB 7200RPM hard drive, a DVD super multi dual-layer optical drive, Nvidia GeForce GT 540M video card with 1GB of dedicated RAM and a 2.0-megapixel webcam. Asus pre-loads Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) onto this laptop.

We really liked the combination of a powerful Intel processor with 4GB of RAM and a powerful video card. This trio gives you ultimate performance from a laptop and especially from a 15.6-inch laptops as opposed to larger notebooks with 17-inch displays. The 750GB hard drive is of the speedy 7200RPM type, which means you get lots of storage space that's also readily accessible for smooth performance.

The Nvidia GT 540M video card allows you to play today's demanding 3D video games with ease and the Asus N53SV does just that. You definitely won't be let down in the performance category with this notebook and that makes it well-worth the moderately-priced price tag.

Asus does include a lot of their customized software on this laptop, but they do give you some pretty handy programs too, like a Live Update application to make sure your computer's drivers are always up-to-date. They also pre-install Microsoft Office 2010 Starter Edition, which is an ad-supported version of Word and Excel.

Asus Laptops N73Jn with a dual core

Asus Laptops N73Jn with a dual core
Asus N73Jn : Laptop speakers have always been pretty pants, but that could change if Asus' latest technology lives up to the hype. The company's created a new N-series range of laptops, including this 17.3-inch Asus N73Jn, that do away with the bog-standard audio gubbins you find in most laptops, in favour of speakers and amplifiers from the sound geniuses at Bang & Olufsen. You can buy one, complete with a dual-core Intel Core i5-520M processor, 4GB of RAM and twin 320GB hard drives, for £1,000.
If looks could thrill

The N73Jn is a beast of a laptop, ostensibly designed to replace whatever desktop PC you're using at home. Its chassis measures a hefty 420 by 287 by 40mm and weighs 3.4kg with its six-cell battery, so only the brave or foolhardy would try to take it on the road.

Unlike many of its peers, Asus has shied away from using glossy plastics and has instead furnished the N73Jn with a gunmetal blue lid, graphite grey keyboard and grey brushed-metal palm rest. It's not especially flashy, but it's a good-looking device that should appeal to many users.
Keys to success

Larger laptops tend to have excellent keyboards, but the N73Jn's is something of a let-down. It is large enough and incorporates a dedicated numerical keypad that makes it easier to enter numbers into spreadsheets, but we can't help thinking it could be a heck of a lot better than it is. We'd have preferred an isolated, island-key design, as we've seen on some of Asus' other premium laptops and netbooks. We'd also like if it didn't flex as much during typing, as this is sometimes an indication of questionable build quality.
Sound judgement

The N73Jn is one of three N-series laptops that use the new SonicMaster audio solution -- a combination of hardware and software co-developed by Asus' own golden-eared audio experts and Bang & Olufsen Icepower. It comprises a discrete digital signal processor, a 3W amplifier, 32mm transducers (speakers) and -- perhaps most importantly -- an 80cc speaker chamber, which Asus says is 400% larger than those you'd find on standard laptops.

Technically, it's all very clever, and during tests, these speakers performed better than the norm. They are loud, clear and effective, provided you're in a small room and don't stray too far from the machine.

The N73Jn is far from perfect though. No amount of fancy branding and technical expertise can get around the fact that these are still laptop speakers. Ultimately, if you want to fill a room with sound, you're much better off using a set of decent external speakers.
The power of visualisation

The N73Jn's speakers may be slightly underwhelming, but the rest of the laptop is top-notch. Under the proverbial hood, Asus has supplied a dual-core Intel Core i5-520M CPU, 4GB of RAM and twin 320GB hard drives, which is a very good core spec.

The N73Jn also has excellent graphics capability. Its 17.3-inch screen has very wide vertical and horizontal viewing angles and great picture quality. Its 1,680x900-pixel resolution isn't quite high enough to make the most of the Blu-ray player you get round the left of the laptop, but it's possible to output 1080p video to a big-screen TV via the HDMI port on the right.

The screen is driven by not one but two graphics cards -- one fast, power-hungry Nvidia GeForce GT335M that handles visually demanding tasks, and another slower, but more efficient, Intel card designed to help prolong battery life. They work together seamlessly. Run a game, and all graphics are automatically pumped through the Nvidia card. The moment the laptop detects you're running an application that isn't as graphically demanding, it'll switch back to the Intel graphics card to conserve power.
You wait ages for a Universal Serial Bus...

The N73Jn has four USB ports, one of which supports the latest USB3 standard. This promises transfer rates 10 times higher than USB2 -- up to a theoretical maximum of 4.8Gbps if you've got a compatible USB3 device -- though real-world speeds are likely to be considerably lower. In our experience, USB3 tends to be a mere four times quicker than USB2, although that's not to be sniffed at.
Quick thinking

The N73Jn offers very respectable performance. Its Intel Core i5-520M processor helped it score a highly presentable 6,654 in the PCMark05 benchmark, which puts it on the same level as laptops such as the Dell Studio 15. Its graphics performance was respectable, too. With the GeForce GT 335M running, it chalked up a 3DMark06 score of 7,120. That's about half what you'd expect from the very best gaming laptops, but it's certainly good enough to run any current game.

Battery life isn't the Asus N73Jn's strong point. Though it has Nvidia Optimus technology, it could only manage a paltry 1 hour and 47 minutes in our intensive Battery Eater classic test, which is designed to identify the laptop's minimum possible battery life. In the less-demanding Battery Eater reader test, used to demonstrate the best-possible battery life, it lasted 3 hours and 7 minutes.
Conclusion

The Asus N73Jn is a great all-round laptop. Its fancy audio system doesn't quite live up to the hype, but it's well designed, offers great performance and looks the part.
